About Wind Power Wind Power Fact & Fiction Economics & Finance of Wind Power

Why are North Hambleton and over 200 other communities forming campaign groups to fight windfarms being developed in their areas?

Why is this being done at break neck speed before adequate research has been done into the suitability of areas, effect on residents or the economic efficiency of wind power?
EU Policy
The EU has set targets for the percentage of renewable energy Europe should be using by 2020.
UK Policy
In response to the EU directive, in 2004, the UK government has set our National targets and each county or district within the UK have been set it's own target
Policy Planning Statements
Policy Planning Statements are issued by the Deputy Prime Ministers Office. The statements all start with the declaration
"Planning shapes the places where people live and work and the country we live in."
Let us hope that the shaping does not destroy our villages and the countryside around us.
To achieve the renewable energy targets the government issued Planning Policy Statement 22 : Renewable Energy
PPS 22 sets out the target of achieving 10% of our energy from renewables by 2010 and 20% by 2020.
This encourages local Planning Departments to pass plans for windfarms
In 2004 the government also issued Planning Policy Statement 7: Sustainable Development in Rural Areas
These 2 papers seem to be at odds with each other

Locally

The government's policy has manifested itself within the Counties/Districts as target megawatt levels for renewable energy by a certain date
The Windfarm Sites
The result of these targets is that companies have evolved that specialise in finding sites for windfarms. This is simply based on finding a land owner with enough land who is willing to sign up for financial gain.
The BWEA
The British Wind Energy Association, is an association of companies in the wind power industry
The BWEA represents the commercial interests of wind power
It is not in the interests of BWEA members to investigate or publicize the negative aspects of windpower
The BWEA is often quoted in the press and representatives are interviewed on radio and television
They BWEA is pleased about PPS22
